Head of Middle Office Operations

Job Description

The Middle Office team performs reconciliations, facilitates the processing of trades, and liaises with internal departments and external counterparties to resolve trade and settlement discrepancies and processing of corporate actions.  The team continuously seeks opportunities to improve its systems and methods, develop new and better ways of doing things, and increase its efficiency. The Middle Office team obtains knowledge about procedures and processes and actively shares information about new developments within the global organization.

In this role, you will be reporting directly to the CRO and working closely with a dedicated team of developers and project managers.

A day in the life

The team begins each day by performing position and PnL reconciliations based on the previous day’s ending data. This is crucial to ensure the firm has accurate data to begin the trading day with. Next, the team will work on resolving trade breaks and fails. The team has an array of tools to help it identify breaks and help decide on and enact what is necessary to resolve them. Each day presents new challenges and the chance to learn more. Throughout the day, the team is working closely with internal departments and external counterparties to resolve any settlement issues. At the end of the trading day, the team will facilitate the processing of trades to ensure reporting is properly set up for the next day’s reconciliations. The team’s responsibilities are rotated such that all members of the team get the opportunity to learn about and work on all facets of the group.

What you will do

  • Oversee the Middle Office and Operations team of 15-10 in Amsterdam and provide leadership and drive business forward
  • Manage projects/initiatives involving the development and implementation of business solutions that enhance efficiency, productivity, and overall operational performance with focus on automation and control improvement
  • Prioritize, structure, and plan improvement roadmap and drive strategic development projects
  • Lead process improvement initiatives
  • Set and report on teams KPIs and work with team on continuous improvement
  • Drive strategic development projects
  • Keeping up to date on industry initiatives
  • Drive the implementation of new counterparties and prime brokers
  • Manage, train and coach the team to meet deliverables and to strive for continuous improvement
  • Communicate with appropriate internal teams, prime broker and counterparty teams to resolve open issues or questions

What you need to succeed

  • Extensive knowledge of the financial services industry, security markets and investment types
  • Experience with various instrument types including equity, fixed income and derivative markets and demonstrated knowledge of security terms and conditions relative to each asset type
  • Experience with settlement and reconciliation processes; corporate actions, claims and payments
  • Strong working knowledge of industry trends and regulatory environment
  • Ability to interact and build effective working relationships with peers and senior management
  • Demonstrated ability to function in a fast paced, high-intensity working environment with multiple and diverse responsibilities
  • Ability to analyze issues quickly and independently and take appropriate action under tight time constraints
  • Entrepreneurial spirit and willingness to take on additional responsibility

What you bring to the table

  • University Degree in in Business or equivalent professional experience
  • Minimum 10 years of industry experience. Middle Office experience and proven operations management experience
  • Deep functional knowledge of operational processes, procedures and issue resolution across global equity and fixed-income instruments
  • Proven track record of successfully managing operational team(s) or departments
  • Demonstrated ability to initiate process changes to improve operational efficiency
  • Proven ability to manage staff development and performance
  • Excellent communication and problem-solving skills, along with the analytical skills needed to identify problems and trends
  • Excellent English communication skills
