Middle Office Accountant

Role Description

We are currently seeking a Middle Office Accountant at HAP Capital. The Middle Office group is focused on running day-to-day Operations at HAP, as well as adding quality, control and integrity to our trade support and operational accounting procedures. An ideal candidate will be reliable, thorough, proactive, able to operate in a fast-paced environment and have a collaborative approach to complex problem solving with a positive can-do attitude. As a Middle Office Accountant, you will report to and work closely with the Middle Office Accounting Supervisor to perform the following:

  • Book, reconcile, and substantiate the Operational Accounting side of month-end, including but not limited to:
    • Trading PnL across multiple businesses within HAP
    • Income and expenses including interest and dividends, and charges related to financing, short stock, and exchange fees
    • Accrual accounting for trading related income and expenses 
  • Manipulate large sets of operational accounting data with appropriate controls in place
  • Assist with researching reporting for complex PnL transactions
  • Learn HAP’s Accounting system and internal applications, and offer related improvement suggestions for booking transactions
  • Develop an understanding of HAP’s various businesses, and leverage this understanding to flag unexpected PnL account activity as a result of trade breaks, pending corporate actions, and mismarked positions
  • Develop an understanding of new business lines at HAP, and assist with implementing new accounting policies and procedures
  • Work closely with Portfolio Managers for inquiries related to Clearing activity, PnL and expense reporting
  • Work directly with HAP’s banking partners to reconcile certain monthly PnL transactions
  • Participate in continuous improvement projects related to PnL and Operational Accounting
  • Assist with providing support to external auditors and accountants related to our firm’s filing requirements

Requirements

  • 1-3 years of professional experience in a similar or related area, e.g., front office accounting, middle office accounting, and/or public accounting
  • Comfortable managing large sets of data
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Determination, grit and a strong attention to detail
  • MS Excel

Additional skills/experience that will reflect favorably

  • Acumatica and/or other accounting system experience
  • Accounting for Broker-Dealers and/or other FINRA-related experience
  • Automation of accounting processes
  • Knowledge or experience with accounting for non-us securities and derivatives a plus
