Head of International Tax Planning and Compliance

Hudson River Trading is looking for a Head of International Tax Planning and Compliance to join our growing Tax team. This is a new position that offers the opportunity to take full ownership of foreign tax issues and compliance requirements across multiple taxing jurisdictions. In this role, you will be required to collaborate with the Head of US Federal Tax Planning, Tax Provisions, and Compliance to  manage the US foreign tax credit structuring and global tax leakage analyses. To be successful in this position, you must be able to work effectively in a fast-paced and dynamic environment, take initiative and be hands-on, and work cross-functionally with multiple departments at HRT.

 Responsibilities

  • Oversee and manage HRT’s international strategic tax planning and compliance which encompasess numerous entities across multiple international jurisdictions
  • Provide oversight, coaching, and mentorship to members of the Tax team to facilitate appropriate knowledge development and career growth
  • Ensure timely compliance with  international tax requirements, and perform technical research and analysis on a variety of tax questions including transfer pricing, permanent establishment, foreign tax credits, and anti-hybrid and tax avoidance rules
  • Manage the international tax compliance process with internal and external parties, including tax provisions, annual returns, and quarterly tax estimates associated with our international entities
  • Ensure the timely preparation, review, and payment of foreign income, VAT, GST, and other taxes, including FATCA reporting
  • Analyze cross-jurisdictional business transactions for tax impacts and ramifications
  • Design and restructure transfer pricing policies and entity ownership to minimize foreign tax leakage. Coordinate preparation of required transfer pricing studies and manage related calculations
  • Advise Management team on tax impact of business decisions, identifying and communicating tax-planning opportunities
  • Manage relationships with external tax advisors and tax compliance vendors. Perform internal research to identify tax issues to determine the scope of their work before engaging them. Review all of their deliverables
  • Effectively partner with business teams and senior management on diverse tax matters as they arise, including tax planning associated with new foreign offices or trading
  • Perform tax planning and tax modeling exercises to support strategic tax restructuring or changes in tax policy
  • Prepare internal tax technical memorandum to support internal tax positions as needed
  • Ensure that existing and future tax processes and controls are designed and operate efficiently, are flexible and scalable, and leverage technology where possible
  • Liaise and manage tax examinations, inquiries, and negotiations
  • Provide the Accounting team with all corporate tax provisions, tax footnotes, associated tax positions (e.g. FIN-48), and related memos necessary to close monthly financials and annual audited financial statements on a timely basis

Requirements

  • Minimum of 10-12 years of US and foreign income tax experience, preferably with private equity/proprietary trading firms, financial services, and/or banking industries 
  • Both corporate and public accounting experience required
  • Advanced degree in Taxation (MS or LLM in Taxation); undergraduate degree in Accounting preferred 
  • Experience and familiarity with US and international tax matters such as: transfer pricing model design and implementation, understanding and applicability of tax treaty terms, structuring of foreign operations to optimize the use of foreign tax credits, GILTI planning, implications of VAT/GST regimes, applicability of anti-hybrid and/or tax avoidance rules, familiarity with country-by-country reporting, and calculation of foreign corporate tax provisions for financial statement reporting purposes.
  • Advanced Excel skills required to support compliance work and review, and when necessary, to model complex tax analyses
  • Income tax provision and international tax controversy experience helpful
  • Knowledge of compliance with GAAP and SEC tax accounting issues, including UTPs (FIN-48)
  • Highly-organized and self-motivated with a strong intellectual curiosity and willingness to take ownership of complex problems
  • Willingness and ability to perform tasks at all levels, from detailed tax research and tax preparation to high level review, with follow-through on commitments
  • Excellent analytical, organizational, written and oral communication skills, with a demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects at the same time
  • Superior work ethic with high level of accountability
  • Prior management experience with strong ability to impart knowledge, train and develop less experienced staff highly preferred
  • Must be an excellent team player with good interpersonal skills
