Head of APAC Legal & Compliance

As part of the Global Legal & Compliance Team you will be responsible for advising and assisting the business with complying with the firm’s legal and regulatory obligations in the APAC region; providing counsel with respect to new and existing APAC business initiatives and business operations; providing supervision, guidance, and career development to the legal and compliance team members in the APAC; and liaising with members of the global legal and compliance teams and business leaders. You will work across offices, jurisdictions, and departments. 


What You’ll Do:

  • Oversee the entire APAC Legal and Compliance function, including supervising the APAC Compliance Manager
  • Advise and assist the business with complying with the firm’s obligations under applicable regulations, including exchange rules, throughout the region
  • Partner with the firm’s business leaders to help advance the firm’s business initiatives, including by providing practical advice and creative solutions
  • Provide counsel to the firm’s leadership with respect to recruiting and HR matters
  • Keep abreast of regulatory changes in multiple jurisdictions, seek advice from the appropriate advisors and disseminate information to business stakeholders
  • Serve as the primary liaison between APAC regulators and the firm
  • Make certain that all external inquiries, audits, questions, questionnaires and reviews (by a regulator, exchange or counterparty) are addressed in a timely and satisfactory manner
  • Provide oversight of surveillance
  • Provide formal and informal mentoring and internal training
  • Along with the APAC legal team, serve as the primary counsel to review and negotiate most APAC contracts while partnering with global legal team members to make the most of internal expertise, assure consistency of approach, and obtain and provide coverage when needed
  • Oversee regional corporate governance

Desired Skills, Experience, and Characteristics:

  • At least 8 years + of experience as a practicing lawyer
  • Excellent knowledge of the APAC regulatory landscape
  • Proven experience with mentoring and managing employees
  • Background in proprietary trading strongly preferred
  • Experience dealing directly with regulators and compliance departments of trading venues
  • Entrepreneurial attitude
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to issue spot and devise solutions – providing not just strategic guidance and practical solutions but also an eagerness and willingness to do the hard work of implementing them
  • Experience with managing corporate governance requirements
  • Ability to thrive, adapt, and excel in a flat, dynamic environment
  • Ability to work independently while maintaining high level of communication with stakeholders across time zones
  • Ability to work collaboratively across many different departments and remote offices, including by traveling to those offices as necessary
  • You are someone with whom people at all levels of an organization want to work
