Senior Manager Risk Culture

As part of the Behavioural Risk division of Macquarie’s Risk Management Group, the Risk Culture team assist Macquarie businesses to determine the soundness, and enable the alignment, of culture to drive good risk outcomes throughout Macquarie Group Limited.

The central function of the team is to apply our well-developed assessment process and undertake independent risk culture reviews across the operating and central service groups to identify the relative strengths and areas for development within a business or function. These findings and accompanying good practice are shared with senior management to affect positive change where necessary. Additional functions within the risk culture team include the provision of risk culture insights and reporting to senior management and the Board, and acting in an advisory capacity to Macquarie businesses where the team’s expertise will lead to better risk outcomes.

Role summary:

As a Risk Culture Senior Manager, you will take a lead role on reviews to assess risk culture in different businesses and functions within Macquarie, confidently applying your professional judgement and relevant experience to our review process to identify strengths and areas for improvement. Strong stakeholder management, particularly the ability to effectively engage on sensitive topics and to manage small project teams, while adhering to our methodology and processes is critical to the role. Being alert to the changing external environment, including regulatory expectations, is of high importance. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Managing the risk culture review process end-to-end and directing the work of a small project team. Your role in the review process will involve:
    • Scoping for the review including project management, stakeholder mapping and engagement
    • Overseeing the development and implementation of a survey and undertaking behavioural interviews with business staff and stakeholders
    • Critically analysing and triangulating survey, interview, and organisational data and documentation to develop risk culture themes and recommendations
    • Facilitating workshops and discussions with the business and relevant stakeholders regarding review findings and recommendations, and preparing summary reporting
  • Working closely with the Insights and Implementation functions of the Risk Culture team to effectively utilise data insights and facilitate action planning within the risk culture review process
  • Playing a role in upskilling team members both through sharing your own experience, and providing learning by doing opportunities day-to-day

You may also be expected to support the advisory work of the Risk Culture team (e.g. training), as well as assisting with management and Board reporting requirements and continuous improvement initiatives. Macquarie is a global business and while the role is Sydney-based, at times, it will require overseas travel.

Who we are looking for:

To be successful in this role you will have relevant education and experience – you will hold a degree relevant to human behaviour (e.g. organisational psychology, behavioural science, or behavioural economics) and have prior work experience within business and/or finance (e.g. legal, audit, risk management, human resources, management consulting, finance). Experience in conducting behavioural assessments/analysing human behaviour is highly desirable. You will have high attention to detail, strong time management skills and clear verbal and written communication capability, as well as strong stakeholder engagement experience. You will bring data literacy skills, and experience analysing and presenting findings in informative and engaging ways with senior audiences. A desire to continually learn and develop your skillset across a broad range of subject matters, and the ability to think strategically and recognise opportunities to utilise your relevant experience to drive Macquarie’s strong risk culture, will set you up for success. While experience with a range of visualisation and statistical software (e.g., PowerBI and SPSS) is desirable, it is not a pre-requisite.

Risk Culture is an exciting area to work in, with growing global recognition that banks’ risk cultures are both foundational and fundamental to their long-term success. A sound risk culture has been integral to Macquarie’s risk management framework since inception and continues to be of high importance to the Group. In addition to on-the-job learning and working alongside a team of experienced subject matter experts, team members within risk culture benefit from a supportive team environment where a significant amount of time and resources are dedicated to coaching and formal learning opportunities.
