Shell Trading and Supply (“T&S”) has an integrated global portfolio of crude oil, refined products, natural gas, LNG, electrical power, chemical feedstocks, biofuels and environmental products. Based in the UK, US, Canada, Singapore, the Netherlands, Japan, the Bahamas, Malaysia, Brazil and Dubai and with over 7,000 employees globally, T&S trades on average over 8 million barrels of physical crude oil, over 6 million barrels of refined products, and 5 million barrels of oil equivalent in natural gas and power each day. In addition, T&S supplies 44,000 retail sites and has more than 3,000 trucks, 381 outside supply points, and 91 terminals, and provides marine expertise to over 50 operating companies by directly managing a fleet of approximately 53 gas and oil tankers.  

In the US, T&S manages more than 10,000 WM of generation capacity; manages, owns, or has contracted for 11,000 GWh of carbon free energy; physically and financially buys and sells electricity, natural gas, crude oil, finished products, feedstocks and operates a regulated swap dealer.

Legal Counsel

What is the role

This position is for an attorney to join a team of approximately 10 legal professionals in Houston principally to advise on crude oil trading matters in North America and refined products matters in the Western Hemisphere. The role provides direct experience in a highly dynamic and commercial environment, and in a key Shell growth area that handles transactions critical to Shell’s energy transition goals.   

Responsibilities include:

  • Work with light supervision of one or more senior legal counsel.

  • Reactively identify legal risks and alternative strategies in a defined area.

  • Ensure documents reflect accurately commercial decisions, always consistent with legal obligations and the Shell Control Framework.

  • Represent Shell vis-à-vis third parties.

  • Instruct and manage external counsel under the supervision of more senior counsel.

  • Work as part of a team and with both internal and external stakeholders with diverse cultural backgrounds.

  • Assist and support the Shell Litigation Team regarding the background and business dimensions in contentious proceedings (litigation, arbitration, mediation, and regulatory investigations).

  • Working in a fast-paced, diversified, and growing practice requiring that this individual be flexible, willing to learn and take on new challenges.

  • The ability to handle a range of client demands in a fast-paced business environment and the ability to work under pressure as operational issues demand are critical.  Speed, accuracy of response and ability to work independent are essential, as are good client relations.

  • Good interpersonal skills to develop and maintain relations with internal and external stakeholders are important.

  • This individual must be self-motivated, self-directed, able to prioritize workload and to work both independently and work as an effective and collaborative team member, while knowing when to seek advice from his or her line manager or more senior colleagues.

Requirements

What we need from you

  • Must have legal authorization to work in the US on a full-time basis for anyone other than current employer.

  • Candidate must have at least 6 years’ experience as a practicing attorney and has law firm, in-house, government background.

  • Bachelor's Degree is required.

  • Licensed to practice law in the State of Texas or the ability to secure a Texas license within one year of date of hire.

  • Experience in complex commercial and/or structured finance transactions is helpful and will be heavily utilized in the role.

  • Knowledgeable in crude oil and refined products trading agreements, bankruptcy/creditworthiness, terminal and storage transactions, contractual interpretation, and handling of contractual disputes.

  • Strong ability to draft with appropriate understanding and interpretation of the commercial intentions.

  • Ability to work on several issues in parallel and to develop and sustain effective relationships with clients and team members at all levels and in a wide range of cultures.

  • Able to give clear exposition of a legal issue and to provide accurate, succinct and comprehensible legal advice.

  • Strong influencing, negotiating and facilitation skills.

  • Good verbal and written communication skills and good drafting skills.

  • Fluent written and spoken English.
