Process Expert – Gas, ETPB and RES

The Role

The Shell global Trading and Supply business is one of the largest energy trading operations in the world. We have key hubs in Dubai, Houston, London, Rotterdam and Singapore, trading in crude oil, natural gas, LNG, electrical power, refined products, chemical feedstocks and environmental products. This combined with an integrated network of supply and distribution activities and an industry-leading shipping and maritime capability add value for Shell across its Upstream and Downstream businesses.

The purpose of this position is to be the Trading Settlements and Accounting (TSA) Process Expert for Gas, Power and Environmental Products covering World Outside North America (WONA). This role will also involve leading a small team of process experts who work alongside the Hydrocarbon operations teams, and Business Partners, to drive Operational Excellence and the improvement agenda.

TSA processes cover buy/sell transactions, Trade book to financial reconciliations, Group disclosures, Stock reconciliations, inter-group balancing, specific accounting, CI, SOX compliance and audit activities. The processes are complex and often time critical; they involve working closely with different teams within the Trading business, particularly the operations teams at the different Trading locations. Each day, Finance Operations processes transactions worth billions of dollars with third parties for Trading and hence poor process performance would have a significant impact on Group profitability, cash flow and reputation. Trading also has significant transaction numbers and value with Group Companies, and hence poor process performance can create significant issues between Trading and other Group Companies.

The T&S business is rapidly changing and the challenges for the next few years will be to support these business changes in a sustainable way while ensuring ongoing operations keep delivering to a high standard. Examples would be further migrations into the operations teams, supporting new market entries/business growth projects/complex deals, system implementation/upgrades/changes, tackling and resolving manual risky processes and generating value from closer integration across the life of the deal.

The process management organization has approx. 320 FTEs, of which 280 FTEs in Chennai and 40 FTEs in Krakow. Process covers physical and financial transactions, Trade book to Financials for WONA Gas, Power and Environmental Products. Krakow. Staff levels are constantly changing due to the new market entries, migrations in and system implementations.

The role demands interactive leadership with Finance Operations in Chennai and Krakow.

Accounting or related business degree is essential. Professional Accounting Qualification would be desirable.

8+ years work experience in various financial positions, with deep understanding and experience in applying accounting, process and controls principles in practice.

Understanding of energy market, prior experience of trading environments and associated financial processes and controls is highly desirable

Experience of leading a small diverse team is desirable.

Strong leadership skills with the ability influence stakeholders and skills to motivate and retain staff, and to develop leadership within an organisation.

Excellent communications skills, both written and oral.

Excellent stakeholder engagement and change management skills, including the ability to drive and influence the Hydrocarbon Management (HM) change agenda.

The role involves extensive interactions with various stakeholders and therefore requires a combination of intellect, maturity, strength of character, and an ability to earn respect. Proven organizational and prioritization skills. Manage ambiguity and build strong relationships at global and local levels.

Process
- Process Ownership for WONA Gas, Power and Environmental Products TSA processes. This requires the incumbent to work with the operations teams and business partners to ensure the process is designed and implemented to deliver top quartile performance.
- Lead Process Performance Reviews with the Gas, Power and Environmental Products businesses
- Ensure alignment and collaboration with other process excellence organisations (in T&S and FO) and Continuous Improvement teams.
- Support the Gas, Power and Environmental Products business change agenda (e.g. New Market entries (NME) and system implementations/changes etc.) ensuring the related TSA process continues to support developing business requirements whilst maintaining a robust financial control framework.
- Develop deep Gas, Power and Environmental Trading business knowledge to ensure sufficient understanding of how potential improvements, new business and systems will impact the related TSA processes.
- Actively support knowledge sharing within the teams

Stakeholders
- Develop and foster connections with relevant business partners in the Gas, Power and Environmental Trading business and other stakeholders (including other processes) to ensure performance and control issues in the end-to-end process are identified and where required process improvements are implemented quickly and also to ensure appropriate input and co-ordination with wider change and development plans.
- Support and assist collaboration and ways of working between operations teams and business partners as required.

People
- Responsible for staff and position planning, employee recruitment and retention across the team. Ensure appropriate linkages to other FO teams to facilitate staff movements both in an out of the team.
- Build process and business knowledge, finance skills and leadership capabilities within the team.
- Lead, manage, develop and coach the team.
