The Role

What is the role

The role will focus on trading of physical and financial power, financial natural gas products, and position management for the ERCOT Power desk to manage a portfolio of supply contracts, asset management of gas, wind, solar and batteries, congestion revenues and customer sales. This role will be focused on the ERCOT market. Proven track record of producing $5-10M of PNL annually.

You work closely with other traders both gas and power as well as originators within the trading guidelines each day to maximize value add and minimize value leakage. 

Responsibilities:

  • Produce PnL by trading short term ERCOT power including Bal-day, Next-day, weekly, prompt markets.
  • Generate PnL by actively trading and manage risks associated with cash and term transmission congestions through CRR (Congestion Revenue Right) auctions and PTP (Point-to-Point)
  • Trade cash and term natural gas markets to secure supply and/or to hedge gas exposure for physical asset
  • Manage risks associated with the physical/synthetic assets by hedging Heat Rate exposures by trading fixed price power, financial/physical gas, and Heat Rate
  • Make daily dispatch decisions for the physical asset by analyzing daily economics of operating power plant
  • Formulate trading strategies and short/long term power (Ercot) market views, by closely engaging to Ercot and PUCT (Public Utility Commission of Texas) meetings and regulatory changes
  • Build and develop necessary tools to collect and analyze market data efficiently and timely to maximize speculative trading profit
  • Work closely with the fundamental and regulatory teams to formulate market views to stay ahead of market dynamics shift in Ercot power market and understand the impact in pricing (stack model)
  • Identify opportunities for speculative CRR and DAM PTP trades by assessing the performance of the electric nodes in the near and long term utilizing Power World
  • Has expertise in coding to make inferences from large data sets and aid in work process improvement/automation projects.  Expertise in VBA, SQL databases, SQL Reporting Services are required, C, R, Python, or other advanced programming language preferred. 
  • Contribute to and ensure alignment with SENA's overall goals and strategies.

What we need from you

  • Must have legal authorization to work in the US on a full-time basis for anyone other than current employer.
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Economics, Business, Finance, Engineering, Mathematics or an equivalent combination of experience and education. Master’s degree in Accounting or Finance preferred. 
  • 3 or more years of professional work experience.
  • Demonstrate Grasp of economic reasoning skills.
  • Understand ERCOT settlements and mark-to-market accounting.
  • Knowledge of and adherence to industry Compliance and Regulatory rules.
  • Thrives in a high-pressure multi-tasking environment where time sensitive tasks/projects must be consistently delivered with high quality.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with time sensitive deadlines.
  • Ability to make quick and well-reasoned decisions is critical.
  • Demonstrated self-starter.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving aptitude.
  • Good human relation skills (oral and written).
