IT Project Manager

The Role

Where you fit in

We play an important role by developing, deploying, and operating Information and Digital Technologies which enable Shell to produce more and cleaner energy for the world.

Shell’s Information and Digital Technologies organisation applies technical, commercial, and emerging digital technologies skills to help Shell industrial assets competitively optimise energy production while reducing emissions intensity. We partner with our business to replicate technologies across our business portfolios.

What’s the role?

The Project Manager is responsible for successful project delivery while ensuring that the project end results (infrastructure, services, etc.) meet the criteria for “Secure & Reliable” operations.   Project Manager is expected to be well versed in Infrastructure services, as well as in Product-based approach and partner with IT Managers, Product Line Managers / Product Managers, Enterprise Technologies Portfolio Managers, and IT Operations teams throughout the project delivery.

Service Development and Deployment refers to a set of activities across multi-disciplinary teams with a joint goal of establishing new technology capabilities (products and services) that are fit for business purpose, fit for future growth, scalable, secure by design, commercially competitive, and user-experience friendly. Project Manager is expected to plan, control, and execute project activities to meet specific business requirements and deliver business value with simplicity and speed – while delivering within agreed parameters of scope, cost, schedule, quality, risk, and benefits. This position will typically lead medium size projects of moderate-to-high solution or operations complexity.

This role is an excellent opportunity to work on infrastructure projects (deploying enterprise technologies) as well as developing and deploying new IT services for assets, technology and digital/emerging technologies at Shell, which serve as direct enablers of Shell’s Digital and Energy Transition journey.

Accountabilities include:

  • Deliver IT Projects through waterfall and/or agile project management methodologies while maximizing delivery effectiveness and performance.

  • Diligently plan and direct activities delivered by supporting and enabling functions – e.g., Architecture, Information Risk Management (IRM), Contracting & Procurement (C&P), Transformational Change, etc.
  • Ensure each delivery workstream has a clearly defined scope, acceptance criteria, and target dates at all times. Continuous planning is key.
  • Motivate and lead project teams with enthusiasm and authority (including those with no direct reporting line to our organisation) while removing blockers so that the team can focus on completing their key activities.
  • Quickly build, leverage, and maintain trusted relationships with stakeholders at senior levels (e.g., IT Managers, Operations Managers, key stakeholders in assets and projects, and various functional disciplines).
  • Understand and navigate complex organisational and governance structures – including aligning stakeholders’ perspectives relative to delivery objectives, methods, timelines, and risks. Must understand stakeholders’ organisational remits, authorities, and influence.
  • Resolve conflicts and deliver difficult messages with integrity and grace – must demonstrate highly effective communication to diverse audiences at all levels.
  • Have appropriate level of knowledge of relevant technologies, industry standards, and services - including but not limited to: Network Infrastructure, Cloud (Azure, AWS), SaaS, PaaS, IaaS, API Integrations, On-Premise Hosting, Cloud-Native Architectures (e.g., containers, micro-services, CI/CD, DevOps, etc.), Information Security principles and standards (expert knowledge not required but adequate understanding and ability to drive projects using these standards is key).
  • Be able to develop and deploy new IT services – from incubating scale (emerging technologies) to enterprise scale (asset technologies).
  • Develop early plans to transition end results of project delivery to IT Operations teams – with commitment from receiving organisation(s).
  • Understand the “business” of IT in line with position seniority: Informed about current activities such as key projects and organisational initiatives; actively seek to develop awareness of project objectives and how they relate to broader organizational goals; aware of broader contexts, current events, and trends that may affect IT strategy and operations; grasps performance indicators of the business and IT.
  • Exercise sound judgment and composure: Demonstrate ability to balance risks and make good decisions in ambiguous or difficult situations. Identify trends and inferences across multiple information sources. Build conclusions from rational analysis of information while avoiding bias, correctly understand and identify underlying relationships, root causes, and implications.
  • Create and deliver status updates and communications for diverse audiences (IT Managers, Operations Managers, Portfolio Managers, etc.)

What we need from you?

  • Must have legal authorization to work in the US on a full-time basis for anyone other than current employer.
  • Minimum five (5) years relevant work experience delivering complex IT Projects working in Trading and Supply domain.
  • Bachelor’s Degree is preferred.
  • Manage project delivery in combined value of up to $2M.
  • Oversee delivery of projects with up to 12 team members (staff and supporting functions).
  • Manage and prioritise delivery across multiple projects (e.g., 3-6 simultaneous projects, depending on size/complexity). Must be able to handle competing and conflicting priorities.
  • Must be able to navigate matrixed organisation effectively.
  • Able to quickly learn and understand new technologies, services, and vendor capabilities as well as internal delivery processes and standards.
  • Able to respond quickly to new discoveries or challenges (e.g., technical integration, vendor readiness, support integration scope and related complexities).
  • Cross-organisational delivery carries the risk of assumptions on each other’s remits, scope, and commitments. Must control and manage assumptions (avoid them or ensure workstreams always validate their assumptions in timely manner).
  • Work in virtual teams across multiple time zones may require availability during non-standard working hours. Manage time and work-life balance is key.
  • Deliver through others with no direct line management.
  • Work with external 3rd party vendors and service providers.
