AI Resident - Materials Informatics Scientist, Computational Chemistry

The Role

About Digital Centre of Expertise

Shell’s Digital Centre of Expertise, part of Shell’s Technology business unit offers the opportunity to lead the digital transformation of the energy industry. We are a world leading community of industrial scientists and engineers committed to using cutting edge R&D to take us through the energy transition into a winning position in a low carbon world.

About Shell.ai Residency Programme

Shell.ai is a change programme designed to support the adoption of AI at scale across Shell through a common platform, community and shared best practices. Shell.ai Residency Programme is a global program sponsored by the Shell Digital Centre of Expertise, the programme offers residents the opportunity to develop deep, technical expertise across the spectrum of AI, learning more about the energy industry and working in agile teams to develop new solutions that can optimise current processes, enable workforce and unlock new business models.

The Shell.ai Residency Programme is a 2-year, full-time, immersive programme, which you to gain experience working on a variety of AI projects across Shell globally. The Programme offers Residents the opportunity to collaborate with like-minded innovators, experts and mentors, while deepening technical expertise across the spectrum of AI including augmenting AI with physics/chemistry knowledge.

As an AI Resident you will get to be involved in real time projects specifically matched to your interests and abilities and to get an insight into our day-to-day business operations. You’ll receive performance evaluations from your mentor and/or direct supervisor, and you’ll find out what the energy industry is really like, from the inside. The

Shell.ai Residency Program offers you an amazing opportunity for learning and discovery. You will enjoy a unique opportunity to:

  • Develop deep technical expertise working on the latest AI related projects
  • Collaborate with like-minded innovators and AI residents community across the globe, Shell experts and mentors
  • Channel your efforts from ideation to execution working to rapidly deploy solutions
  • Deploy solutions across a breadth of Shell businesses - from Exploration to Trading, or Retail to New Energies

Where you fit?

As part of Shell’s Research & Development field, you'll be instrumental in helping meet the world's challenges of producing energy from alternative sources. Development of new chemistries and processes are at the core of our ambitions. Royal Dutch Shell aims to be net-zero carbon company by 2050 AI and ML tools will play an important role in enabling our Scientists and Technologists to achieve this goal. You will be interacting with the scientists to understand real world problems, chart out a data driven solution, and design and develop into an MVP. Therefore, you should be comfortable talking about chemical compounds as well as computers. Using AL and ML in core chemical research is a relatively new area with work being reported from many sub fields such as NLP, Image Analysis etc. along with many efforts to create curated databases. AI residency in Materials Informatics will provide you an opportunity to work on cutting edge technologies make meaningful contribution to a cleaner global energy future and sustainable material development.

What’s the role?

You’ll be helping Shell build an enabling Materials Informatics platform and projects supporting businesses and strategies of Royal Dutch Shell. Your role will focus on building capabilities and skills in Material informatics to solve targeted problems in Shell's traditional businesses and new areas related to energy transition.

You will develop and use sophisticated data mining, data analytics and machine learning based approaches in conjunction with materials knowledge coming in from multiscale materials modeling and experiments to establish processing-structure-property-performance (PSPP) relationships in materials towards accelerated materials selection/discovery/development. You will develop/apply methods/tools to identify patterns/ features and extract the maximum possible information from high-throughput simulations, experiments and databases (e.g. from analytical characterization data, process data, sensor data etc.). working as an integral member of a diverse global team. You will also be involved in building materials databases integrating Shell’s own data with external data in this space. You will analyze results to clearly identify what worked and what did not. Along with data related issues, you will also report your findings in the context of underlying data generating process i.e. applicable chemical theory and therefore ability to understand the governing chemical rules will be a key skill set.

What we need from you?

We are keen to hear from a research aptitude and original thinking background. We expect you to be capable of business problem solving, with a mindset to deliver end-to-end technical solutions, have flexibility and technical breadth in learning and applying appropriate tools (different machine learning algorithms and computational techniques as required for solving material science and engineering problems).

It’s your personal skills that will make all the difference. Positive and proactive, a natural collaborator – someone who can cultivate strong professional networks and operate effectively in a corporate, team-focused environment. You’re accomplished at bringing out the best in others too, whether that’s supporting and coaching others or influencing and negotiating with key stakeholders and decision-makers.

Of course, you’ll need to convince us that you have a keen interest in Shell’s core technologies like catalysis, chemicals etc. as well as materials for new energy applications. You should have competencies to build materials databases, create ML workflows/apply informatics integrating with materials science knowledge towards material selection for business applications relevant to above mentioned areas. For you to be able to quickly grasp technical detail and to work directly with experts in diverse fields including experimental, computational and AI researchers, it’s vital that you have the all-round communication and collaboration skills and an ability to integrate different languages used in a multidisciplinary collaboration team towards fulfilling the project goals. You should be able to translate that information into language that’s readily understood by business partners and colleagues from other backgrounds.

Qualification and Experience:

  • PhD or MS with 3+ years relevant experience
  • Specializing in material informatics with a strong statistics and mathematics foundation from any of the disciplines in Materials Science, Physics, Chemistry, Mechanical engineering, Metallurgical Engineering or any other allied fields with related qualification.
  • Understanding of chemical properties and knowledge of various databases
  • Proficiency in R/Python/MATLAB and ML libraries for classification/regression/data cleaning tasks
  • Experience in any one of the deep learning frameworks (torch, tensorflow etc.) with focus on NLP
  • Preferable to have understanding of different types of databases, data fetching using api calls, and setting up experimental servers such as flask
