NBS Adviser Innovation

The Role

Where you fit in?

Nature Based Solutions (NBS) comprises all activities related to the protection of or (re-) development of natural ecosystems resulting in natural carbon sequestration, and the marketing, trading and sale of resulting carbon credits and other services and products. NBS are expected to play a material role in tackling climate change (this report from NGO The Nature Conservancy gives a good overview) and have also been identified as a potentially material lever to achieve Shell’s announced Net Carbon Footprint ambition.

The NBS team in Emerging Energy Solutions is developing Shell’s business model and growth approach to realize NBS’s potential for Shell. This includes pursuing project investments that will yield carbon credits in the near term, but also more programmatic approaches with global multilaterals and land resource holders to assess what role Shell can play in the development of these resources.

This effort is being conducted in concert with other teams in Shell who are involved with NBS. There is a sizeable Environmental Products Trading Business in Shell Trading that already serves internal and external customers seeking to offset GHG and other emissions. There are also pilots being conducted in various Downstream LoBs, aimed at assessing the potential of carbon neutral energy product sales to Shell customers.

What’s the role?

NBS is a dynamic business where identifying, developing, and deploying technologies in fields as diverse as MRV (Monitoring, Reporting, Verification), Carbon and Biodiversity accounting, Remote Sensing, carbon storage enhancement products or Digital tools is key to Shell’s success.

The NBS Adviser Innovation is accountable for the management, delivery, and optimization of innovations that improve the quality and volume and/or and reduce the access cost and time of carbon credits.

She/He works in close cooperation with multiple stakeholders to deliver value; key stakeholders may be internal (Research, Trading, Ventures, Legal, …) and/or external (technology and method developers, project developers and implementers).

The NBS Adviser Innovation focuses on Impact and Value and targets her/his efforts in activities with a short time to deployment (<2Y).

The NBS Adviser Innovation will join the growing NBS Innovation team within a central development community comprising Technical, HSSE, Geomatics, Pathways, and Innovation capabilities. This role is central to the NBS strategy to build a diversified portfolio of projects and technologies to differentiate Shell’s position in NBS.

The role offers a unique opportunity to work across all geographies and pathways and across the full value chain from the identification, generation to monetization of carbon offset products.

The role provides an opportunity to join NBS at the shaping stage, not just in Shell but also in the broader societal and corporate space.

More specific responsibilities include:

  • Support Shell’s deployment of Shell or third-party technologies by planning for, delivering, and drawing learnings from demonstration pilots in Shell project sites

  • Ensure that pilot activities are undertaken with HSSE and Goal Zero in mind, in accordance with Shell Business principles, and under the appropriate fit for purpose legal framework

  • Identify and help select promising impactful technologies, pathways, and delivery mechanisms seeking support and guidance from peers and leaders to further develop Shell’s competitive advantage of Shell in NBS

  • Active participation in technical and innovation initiatives across Shell and externally

  • Advise Shell on future trends and potential opportunities and take ownership of themes for the group such as Community engagements, Biodiversity, and/or Blue Carbon

What we need from you?

We’re keen to hear from individuals with professional experience in the field of carbon projects and technology development and deployment. The role does not require individuals to be technical expert in any of the fields of NBS but need to have strong interpersonal skills, a demonstrated passion for Nature and a strong drive to lead the change necessary to scale up NBS while maintaining and improving its quality.

We also hope you possess the following skills and experience:

  • A working knowledge of NBS with a passion for nature and a solution-oriented interest in the energy transition

  • A working understanding of carbon certification standards, regulatory accounting, auditing requirements, and practical implications and opportunities

  • A demonstrated ability to foster good working conditions in delivery teams and motivate others especially those without formal authority and located virtually

  • A business focus mindset and a demonstrated track record of communication towards decision makers and decision review forums to enable objective decision to be made for the benefit of Shell NBS.

  • Strong project management skills, with ability to work through complexity and uncertainty

  • A hunger for success, with hands-on experience in developing business strategies to develop and grow new opportunities for Shell

  • Ability to work with key Shell business colleagues and become an integral part of virtual teams by adding value and bringing solutions

  • Excellent communication and presentation skills

Additional information

  • Business travel is expected on a semi-regular basis.
