What is the purpose of the Remote Ops Centre (ROC) Lead Operator role?
The Canada Integrated Gas Remote Operations Centre (ROC) is accountable for 24/7/365 efficient and effective alarm management across the Groundbirch and Gold Creek fields. The ROC is the first line of defense (level 1) in the operational exception-based ways of working. The ROC is responsible for effective collaboration with operations to optimize daily plant & field activity by exception. The future ways of working in the ROC has them accountable for gas control from the Groundbirch asset to LNG Canada and will be responsible to interact efficiently with Shell Trading to protect Shell’s value chain. They are co-located with the Surveillance Hub and asset teams to enable efficient escalation/support of alarms and events. The ROC operates out of the Shell Centre in Calgary, AB.
What will I be responsible for in this role?
The ROC Lead Operator is accountable along with the ROC Supervisor for ensuring that the ROC team operates as a seamless organization and works effectively and collaboratively with all stakeholders including field and plant operations, technical teams, trading, etc. The ROC Lead operator will be trained to operate in the ROC as well as providing support to the ROC Supervisor in managing shift schedules, standardizing work processes, ensuring training and signoffs are kept up to date, tracking KPI’s etc.
What actions, tasks and processes will I be responsible for in this role?
Maintain operating integrity, reduce deferment, and manage change through collaboration with cross functional stakeholders (plant & field operators, maintenance, and surveillance hub engineers)
Focal point for day-to-day production communications and daily prioritization
Monitor Safety Critical Elements to minimize API tiered events
Manage excursions in asset operating parameters (alarm and event management, call outs)
Drive ROC continuous improvement to optimize exception-based operations model
Production Operations and Business Delivery responsibility:
Exception based monitoring of all processes and equipment associated with the field/wells and gathering system
Closely monitor HMI, control room alarm screens, bypasses, ESD’s, levels, pressures, etc.
Comply with variable table processes and procedures
Identify issues and problems that may negatively impact production, costs, and reliability. Decide on appropriate action and relay information to the appropriate stakeholders.
Work closely with shift team leads, field/plant operators, operations supervisor and surveillance hub on technical challenges and opportunities. Collaborate with all key stakeholders as needed to deliver effective, efficient, and safe operations of the asset and achieve asset business targets.
Facilitate proactive technical monitoring through attendance of the Weekly Production Review and efficient response to alarms & events
SIMOPs monitoring & alarm management during completion operations
Seek out opportunities to reduce waste and promote continuous improvement.
Health, Safety, Security, Environment (HSSE) responsibilities:
Participate actively and constructively in Shift Handover & Start of Shift Orientation (SOSO) meeting to provide situational awareness to key stakeholders. Follow safe work practices, procedures, and Life Saving Rules
Discuss safety aspects of the job with operators as needed.
Participate in investigative processes, causal learning exercises, etc.
Recognize deviations from safe work practices/procedures and take corrective action
Recommend appropriate changes that may be required to OCA, procedures, practices, guidelines, or training materials. Maintain good working knowledge of all practices and procedures including OCA and local regulations. Sustain and promote good housekeeping practices in the ROC

What do we need from you?
Upstream and Midstream Operations experience
10+ years control room experience.
Strong organizational leadership abilities
Must have experience leading a team
Significant knowledge of SCADA, PI process book, Facilities HMI ways of working
Experience translating business requirements into technology solutions or application services
Good knowledge of digital ways of working, proficient in MS Office Applications (Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams, Word)
Significant experience in a technical operating environment
Knowledge of the Emergency Response protocol
Demonstrated commitment to HSE Goal Zero.
Ability to work in a rapidly changing environment and can adjust priorities based on business needs while maintaining a practical approach.

Clear understanding of control system alarms (criticality and response).

Strong ability to build and maintain relationship with Production Engineers and field/plant Operators. Strong time management, setting priorities and goals with minimal supervision to ensure deadlines are met.
