West Gas Trading Supervisor

The Role

What is the role

This role will develop and implement the long-term strategy for the Natural Gas trading business within the West region of the United States.  The successful candidate will be the lead trader on a desk of experienced traders.  They will work with the team to manage a portfolio of customer business, structured commodity agreements, and assets.  A strong view of market fundamentals and the ability to drive long term positions to adjust with changing market dynamics is the most critical element of the role.    

The role will encompass speculative trading, supply and marketing arrangements, asset optimization, model development and risk management activities to preserve and create value, while minimizing risk via the use of all traded instrument types available.  This individual must have expert knowledge of gas market fundamentals, Natural Gas regulatory knowledge and pricing dynamics.  The individual will work with other gas and power trading teams to deliver Shell Energy’s overall strategy.

The established team consists of 5-6 natural gas traders in achieving annual gross margin trading targets of $35-45 million and budget cost targets as designated by GM Trading.

Leads and maintains a culture where Compliance is a Priority and the highest standards of integrity and ethics are maintained in all interactions with industry participants, customers and internally with team members and colleagues.

Accountabilities 

  • Supervises a team of 5-6 Gas traders in achieving annual gross margin trading targets as designated by GM Trading.
  • Manage physical and financial power, natural gas trading in the relevant regional market.
  • Manage financial and physical options trading and valuation for speculation and hedging.
  • Managing an extensive portfolio of transportation, storage and customer load.
  • Develop long-term business and trading strategies.
  • Lead and maintain a culture where Compliance is a Priority and the highest standards of integrity and ethics are maintained in all interactions with industry participants, customers and internally with other team members and colleagues.
  • Continually evaluate market positions and develop customer product offerings, including complex multiyear structured transactions with Origination.
  • Collaborate and partner with internal teams such as Finance, Credit, Legal, Structuring, Operations, Regulatory, Fundamentals, Contracts, Market Risk.
  • Part of West Gas and Power leadership team – will share a lead role in setting culture and standards of performance in addition to strategy and overall direction of West business plan.

What we need from you

  • Bachelor's degree in Economics, Business, Finance, Mathematics or Engineering. Master’s Degree preferred.
  • 10+ years of experience in the relevant gas and power markets.
  • 10+ years of trading experience with options, futures, forwards and other derivatives.
  • Fundamental understanding of the relevant gas and power markets.
  • Demonstrated ability to make quick and well-reasoned decisions is critical.
  • Documented history of leading a team, developing staff, managing budget, focus on compliance, respect for colleagues, and the capacity to work across boundaries with other Shell Trading teams and Functional groups.
  • Excellent analytical and quantitative skills, strong written and verbal communications skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and thrive in a fast-paced team environment.
  • Leadership qualities, decisiveness, respect for colleagues, plus the ability to work with the team and with other groups in Shell are critical qualities for the position.
  • Knowledge of fundamental simulation forecasting tools and the manner which these can be used to identify opportunities.
  • Knowledge of Environmental Products traded in the West.
  • Able to reside in San Diego
