The Role

Where you fit in?

This role involves supporting Shell Energy Europe (“SE-EE”), a part of Shell Trading & Supply (“T&S”), which has rapidly growing renewable power, gas and environmental products trading businesses that are significant contributors to Shell’s energy transition ambitions. 

Trading and decarbonisation are key strategic priorities of the Shell Group, which has created the need to build its functional and business capabilities, including this senior legal counsel role.  This is an exciting role supporting not only in a legal capacity but also as a business partner.  It is an excellent opportunity to play a major part in the realisation of Shell’s energy transition goals and make a real difference.

The lawyers supporting SE-EE are located in London (head office), the Netherlands, Cologne, Hamburg, Paris, Madrid, Milan and Istanbul.  You will be a senior lawyer within SE-EE’s power trading legal team working closely with, and reporting into, the Managing Counsel for Power to support T&S in the delivery of its targets.  This role is based in London.

What’s the role?

SE-EE is building a European power business, as part of Shell’s integrated power strategy and has industry leading energy transition ambitions.  As part of this target, SE-EE plans on expanding rapidly with a strong appetite for executing an increasing number of structured deals.  Several of these opportunities are first time deals for SE-EE and require strategic thinking as well as technical, commercial and contractual experience and knowledge. 

In addition to providing legal advice and business partnering, this role includes the following:

  • promoting teamwork between lawyers working in different regions and businesses by encouraging a collaborative approach to cross-business and cross-regional matters
  • protecting the rights and reputation of Shell companies in dealings with governmental and regulatory authorities, local communities and other stakeholders
  • liaising with subject matter experts (anti-trust, trade controls, regulatory advisers) to provide tailored support for specific deals
  • assisting with pre-litigation disputes arising out of or in connection with business activities
  • participating in industry bodies to help influence legal developments in the industry and support legal/regulatory lobbying initiatives.

What are we looking for?

We are looking for an experienced lawyer with expertise in the legal aspects of the UK/European power markets who can provide support on power related trading activities.  You will have detailed and demonstrable knowledge of a wide range of power origination and trading documentation such as negotiating and drafting PPAs, route-to-market arrangements, optimisation, battery storage and ancillary services arrangements, energy management services agreements, structured physical or financial commodity products and innovative producer or aggregator service arrangements. 

We would like to hear from you if you have the following skills and experience:

  • Demonstrated and recent power industry expertise in the UK/European power markets.  Experience of working within a power trading role and/or for renewable developers, battery owners/developers or similar are an advantage
  • Excellent negotiating and legal drafting skills; preferably with experience in drafting and negotiating energy marketing and trading agreements, PPAs, structured transactions and derivative agreements
  • International transactional experience and excellent grasp of legal as well as business issues, industry development and legal, social and political trends that may have an impact on the business
  • The ability to find creative solutions to legal and commercial issues, but within acceptable legal and risk frameworks; as well as an ability to understand and take account of business drivers and needs
  • The ability to deliver effective legal advice, identify and clearly explain legal risks and develop sound mitigation strategies; having a sound judgement in sensitive areas and difficult issues as well as managing stakeholder relationships
  • Supporting new business initiatives in the form of new products and entry into new jurisdictions, including the expansion of T&S’ offtake capabilities in Europe
  • Motivated with a direct, action-oriented approach to achieving legal and business objectives and an ability to build credible relationships with a variety of stakeholders across the legal function, T&S and Shell generally
  • Solid communication skills and a willingness and ability to coach and develop more junior/less experienced colleagues
  • Highly strategic legal outlook and commercially savvy
  • The ability to build, maintain and instruct a network of in-house and external counsel
  • The ability to ensure that legal and compliance issues are taking into consideration and fully complied with
  • Fluent in English, both spoken and written
