The Role

Where you fit in?

Shell Trading and Supply (T&S) has an integrated global portfolio of crude oil, refined products, natural gas, LNG, electrical power, chemical feedstocks and environmental products. Based in the UK, US, Canada, Singapore, The Netherlands, Japan, Bahamas, Brazil, Dubai and Russia, and with over 7000 employees, Shell Trading and Supply (Shell T&S) trades on average over 12 million barrels of crude and oil products and 5 million/boe in natural gas and power each day. Shell T&S has also recently established a Low Carbon Fuels (LCF) business (as part of T&S Products) which intends to optimize globally low carbonfuels (such as bionaphta, ethanol, biodiesel) and developing new opportunities in feedstock supply, sustainable aviation fuel as well as routes to market for biomethane. The LCF business will also act as key enabler for the success of other Shell businesses working in this area.

What’s the role?

Professional, timely, cost-effective and commercial legal advice and support to the T&S crude and oil products trading and shipping businesses in Singapore and Dubai and together with other team members, to work closely with the Lead Counsel/Global Focal and Asia Focal to provide regional legal support for the new and growing T&S Low Carbon Fuels business, which will include supporting the strategic long-term sourcing of biofuel feedstock, together with increasing Trading Commodity Finance activity, working across jurisdictions where nascent legal frameworks and regulatory regimes are complex, ambiguous and frequently changing. 

The role also involves working with the LCF regulatory advice team and advising on risk appetite (commercial and regulatory) from a regional perspective.    

Successful candidate will be accountable for the following:

  • Work within a team to provide legal support for the T&S crude and products businesses in Singapore and Dubai on commercial, operational and project matters.
  • Work with the global network of legal support for T&S LCF, leveraging lawyers across T&S and Downstream and externally, to integrate and resolve legal and/or regulatory issues across multiple jurisdictions.
  • Proactively identify legal risks and propose alternative strategies to manage novel commercial structures and business development, generally in the crude and products trading business and in the Low Carbon Fuels space; and
  • Provide support for the T&S LCF Regulatory Advice team in an uncertain global regulatory environment to mitigate potentially material reputational and/or financial impact.
  • Ability to quickly identify potential regulatory exposure in business proposals and work with business / Regulatory advice team to devise strategies for managing that exposure.
  • Work independently on most matters with support from line manager and experienced colleagues in the team.
  • Ensure documents reflect accurately commercial decisions, at all times consistent with regulatory / legal obligations and the Shell Control Framework.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and able to develop and maintain relations with internal and external stakeholders are important.  
  • Represent Shell vis-à-vis third parties and to senior leadership in the Shell T&S organization
  • Ability to work as part of a team and with both internal and external stakeholders with diverse cultural backgrounds in a dynamic and fast-moving environment.

  • Fast paced, diversified and very fast-growing business will require that this individual be flexible, think laterally, be willing to learn, and be willing to take on new challenges.
  • The ability to handle a range of time sensitive client demands, mixing strategic project work and day to day transactions and queries, in a fast-paced and dynamic trading environment and the ability to work under pressure is critical as operational and commercial issues demand.
  • The role will require the ability to connect across a range of cultures and the ability to operate in uncertain jurisdictions and on high-risk transactions, including exposure to a growing portfolio of structured commodity finance and divestment linked transactions, together with LCF and Crude/OP business development.
  • Supporting the Group Compliance program in difficult environments and under challenging conditions.

What we need from you?

While a Law degree and professional legal qualification in a common law jurisdiction is essential, we are also keen to hear from candidates with the following experience:

  • At least 12 years of post-qualification experience
  • Experience working within a physical commodity trading environment, preferably with exposure to crude or refined products trading, would be well regarded. In addition, given the integrated nature of the nascent LCF business and project pipeline, those with New Business Development/M&A and project development would also be well suited.
  • Understanding of the main legal areas relevant to international commodities trading and regulatory regimes. An understanding of the regulations applicable to the LCF business and an understanding of the impact and implications of the regulations applicable to the T&S business in Asia would be particularly helpful.
  • Understanding of some of the main legal areas relevant to integrated project development and value chains, structured finance, credit security and insolvency and exchange trading of commodities.
  • Ability to draft and negotiate with appropriate understanding of the regulatory background and commercial intentions.
  • Strong influencing, negotiating and facilitation skills, including the ability to lead negotiations in transactions with multiple parties.
  • Experienced in international common law and/or civil law contracts.
  • Ability to work on multiple issues in parallel with an ability to prioritize.
  • Ability to develop and sustain relationships with clients at all levels and in a range of cultures.
  • Ability to understand and take account of business drivers and needs and balance with wider constraints.
  • Able to quickly identify and give clear exposition of a legal issue and to provide succinct, practical and accurate legal advice.
  • Attention to detail, proactive, pragmatic, autonomous and hands on;
  • Excellent command of English language, both spoken and written/drafting skills.
  • Ability to address issues creatively and sensitively and to build strong relationships across a range of organizations and internal stakeholders.
  • Strong academic background and capable of applying jurisprudence in real situations.
