IT Operations Engineer - Digital SRE

The Role

Where you fit in

Within Asset Safety & Environment Service Operations Management (Asset SE SOM), we will be working on the advanced technologies that includes but are not only limited to these, such as, Industrial Internet of Things (IIOT), Shell Sensor Intelligence Platform (SSIP), Digital TWIN, Advanced Analytics, Wearable mobile technologies. For us to execute and automate operational processes fast, accurately, efficiently, and securely - we are looking for IT Ops Engineers skills to help us bridge the gap between operations staff and developer teams, aiming to expedite developments while retaining core resiliency.

Understands, delivers and improves the range of activities necessary to seamlessly integrate and operate one of the world’s largest IT estates. The scope covers service management activities, Hybrid on-premises and Cloud operational landscapes with many integration points; and the integration of the interdependent services of diverse internal and external service providers into end-to-end services which deliver value to Shell.

We see IT Ops Engineer’s roles and responsibilities as a combination of technical and management skills. As part of their core responsibilities, IT Ops Engineers build tools that aid automation in managing IT operations and support. As such, IT Ops Engineers enable automation for some of the following key functions - Continuous Integration and Delivery (CI/CD) across SDLC phases; Monitoring; Alerts; Incident Response; Infrastructure Component Provisioning and Patching.

What we expect from you

  • We are looking for a passionate resource who needs to be agile enough to wear a technical hat and manage operations simultaneously. 
  • Build, deploy and operate functional systems that improves operational reliability and collaboration within a Product Team.
  • It is essential to have excellent communication and coordination skills to successfully integrate various functions in a coordinated manner and deliver the responsibilities to meet operate objectives. 
  • Manage change (technical/functional) or as changes to the roadmap are proposed, lead the impact analysis, considering short and long-term trade-offs, benefits and risks, then synthesize and communicate options that will help the leadership facilitate decision-making.
  • Track key milestones and manage any schedule or scope risks, by building and creating solid mitigation plans
  • Ensure on-time delivery of committed deliverables and monitoring the business solutions, ensuring standard compliance.
  • Regularly checks and monitors alarms, diagnoses symptoms, analyzes root causes, and employs preventative measures to avoid reoccurrence of similar issues.
  • Designs, tests, and supports automated risk-management techniques and enables the support of continuous and consistent integration techniques for the development teams.
  • Plays the role of an advocate and promotes knowledge sharing and Product culture across the entire organization.
  • Manages contracts with key Infrastructure Service Providers and Application Suppliers.
  • Ensure that services provided by third parties are secure and reliable while exercising contractual clauses to ensure key KPIs (e.g. Critical Service Levels, Key Measures) are upheld.
  • Acts as the escalation point between Business IT and 3rd party provided for any deterioration in service levels. Further, with the advent of cloud-based infrastructure services.
  • Increasingly responsible to manage vendor operations teams to ensure appropriate management and change to the infrastructure services provided to the end user organization.
  • Monitors service levels and resolves issues. Required to quickly debug and resolve critical issues.
  • Collaborates across team(s) and has some exposure to / interaction with business leadership.
  • Works independently under broad managerial supervision. Delivers the work as assigned, applying the work procedures, frameworks. Guidance provided for those tasks where there are limited precedents available.

What we need from you.

  • Excellent knowledge / understanding of principles of Support delivery (ITIL)and what factors contribute to a great digital experience leveraging DevOps.
  • Experience working with Microsoft Azure Environment, Azure integrations, and deployment of its virtualization suite.
  • Comprehensive understanding of operational best practices and in introducing automation using CI/CD pipelines or agile practices.
  • Ability to crunch operate data and continuously improve safety, security, reliability and affordability of the landscape.

  • A minimum of five years’ experience working in a operations team role closely related to the objectives described in this job pack.
